Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium

Hyderabad got the nod for hosting not just the India-Australia one-day cricket international on October 5 but also Test cricket in future.

“I believe this ground which has already hosted an international match in 2005 will be an excellent international cricket venue and I recommend that it be accredited by the ICC as suitable for both ODI and Test cricket matches subject to minor alterations,” ICC match referee Alan Hurst said in his report, a copy made available to The Hindu.

The ICC match referee who inspected the venue recently, suggests measures which include improving furniture in players’ dressing rooms and removal of CCTV cameras from the rooms as it would be a breach on the privacy of the players.

Shivlal complimented

“The facilities are outstanding and a lot of research and planning having gone into constructing rooms and spaces.

It is a ground that will please players, officials and the spectators alike,” Hurst observed in his report. He made a special mention of N. Shivlal Yadav, HCA secretary, in his report.

“He is largely responsible for the planning and design of this venue having visited major grounds in other Test playing countries including Australia and South Africa to get best ideas.

The result is that the playing surface is well grassed, drained and facilities are very spacious and well-equipped.”

“The pitch is hard and well grassed with Bermuda. The bounce and carry looked good. The outfield is relatively even and well-grassed. The extensive radial drainage system ensures excess water flows into a moat that encircles the ground. It also doubles as a security zone and no high fences are needed,” Hurst explained.

The timing of the report could not have been more perfect for the HCA secretary as the preparations are in full swing to ensure that the India-Australia match is a huge success.
