Neem trees (Azadirachta indica), the “Grama Vaidyudu” (village doctor) of rural India, also declared the Tree of Andhra Pradesh is on the verge of extinction if one goes by the unchecked felling by the timber merchants of Karimnagar district.

Everyday about 20 to 30 lorry loads of this tree are transported to various parts of the state especially to Hyderabad city. The real estate owners and apartment builders are using it to make furniture, doors and window frames.

The neem tree, not only has medicinal values but is also used for pest control in farming activities.

As the neem tree is one of the exempted species in the timber transit rules of the district, timber merchants fell the mature and immature neem trees indiscriminately, causing a serious harm to the environment.

In the wake of no checking on the felling of neem trees, they are cut and transported from the forests, villages, road sides and other places of the district.

In order to check the illegal felling, the District Forest Officials have urged Collector M. V. Satyanarayana to delete neem tree from the list of exempted species and bring it under the purview of timber transit rules. Accordingly, it was also decided to submit a proposal to the State Government in this regard at the District Forest and Wildlife Protection committee meeting here.
Extensive use

The forest officials said that the builders of Hyderabad city were using the neem wood extensively because of the non-availability of teakwood and steep hike in its price. The apartment builders and others were using the neemwood for making door and window frames.

If the felling of neem trees is unchecked, the Karimnagar district would turn into a desert and there would be ecological imbalance,” said a Divisional Forest Officer and urged the Government to provide them with some powers to check illegal felling of neem trees and its transportation.
