The next time you go shopping in a mall, do check the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) especially if you are in Hyderabad.

Raids conducted by the Controller of Legal Metrology have revealed that shopping malls are cheating consumers by charging far more than the original MRP on many products. They have also been accused of not providing full information about the products.

Some malls have even replaced the original MRP stickers with their own. In once such raid it was found that mosquito repellent worth Rs 14 was sold for Rs 115.

Similar violations were found on imported computers and peripherals during raids at Chenoy Trade Centre in Secunderabad on Saturday.

“Most of the computers, goods, accessories, are imported and there is one price on the box and there’s another price fixed on it by the importer, so there are two prices indicated on the box, which is wrong,” says Controller of Metrology Tej Deep Kaur Menon.

The Department says that according to the new rules, it is mandatory to print consumer helpline numbers and manufacturing address on the products.

But most products including garments and groceries are being sold without these details. The dealers say that they were not aware of the new rules.

“At least they should have given us some notice saying that it should be on all the products, they have not provided us anything. And for the betterment of customers, we’ve already provided all the service centres names on the back of our invoices, it’s already there, but they want it on all the products, this is not possible as of now,” President, Twin Cities Computer Dealers Association Lalit Malhotra says.

So the Department wants consumers to be more careful while shopping at big malls and report to the authorities if they find any discrepancies.
