The endowments department is preparing a master plan for development of 75 temples in the State in view of its requirements for the next 500 to 1,000 years.

Works costing Rs 100 crore were identified in these temples, according to Endowments Commissioner P Sundar Kumar. Kumar told newsmen today that the development works would commence in a few months and a chief engineer was appointed for the purpose.

The department, for instance, acquired 225 acres for implementing the master plan in Dwaraka Tirumala.

As regards the temple lands, three land protection cells have been set up in Hyderabad, Kakinada and Tirupati. Land records are being fed into computers and digitised.

A separate legal cell was created to deal with the cases pertaining to temple properties.

The Dhoopa Deepa Naivedyam scheme would cover about 4,000 temples (half of them with the help of Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam) by Aug 15. Already cheques were distributed to more than 500 temples.

Further, the department was trying to bring about uniformity in prices (Rs 5) of ‘prasadam’ irrespective of the quantity (laddu - 100 gm, pulihora - 200 gm and two vadas - 150 gm).

The department has also decided to set up at least seven ‘Agama Pathasalas’ and revive the existing ones.

A sum of Rs 500 would be paid every month to each student through banks and a lump sum of Rs 1 lakh would be given as an incentive on completion of the courses.

REFRESHER COURSE: A seven-day refresher course would be conducted for 10,000 ‘archakas’ to ensure that temple rituals are performed according to ‘Agama Sastra’, Kumar said.

As regards Simhachalam temple, the old ‘Annadana Satram’ would be dismantled to facilitate expansion of the hilltop bus station.

Besides, a three-storied complex comprising a parking lot, a free meals choultry and a restaurant would be constructed.

Tenders would be called in a few days after the works are finalised.
