The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) might go for a total ban on roadside parking on all the busy thoroughfares like Ameerpet, Begumpet, Abids, Koti, M.G. Road, R.P. Road and few others to ensure faster traffic flow.

This could be part of the urgent measures to be initiated after Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy read the Riot Act to officials of different departments including GHMC to improve traffic situation in the next three months.

GHMC has come out with a plan to spend up to Rs. 20 crore for taking up works in the area under its jurisdiction, which it feels could allow smoother vehicular movement.

These were improving 30 more junctions with 14 in progress at a cost of Rs. 7 crore and traffic signals at 50 more locations with 25 already sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 6 crore.

Road markings with thermo paints are to be taken across 150 kms stretch along with zebra crossing at a cost of Rs. 4 crore, construction of central medians for a stretch of four kilometres at a cost of Rs. 2 crore and 20 new foot-over-bridges to add to the seven commissioned ones.

Twenty-two more roads are to be widened along with the work on 68 other roads and removal of bottlenecks in the form of structures belonging to the railways and the Secunderabad Cantonment Board.

GHMC may also start cracking down on cellar violations for allowing more space for parking, according to senior officials.
