The US-based Georgia Institute of Technology on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Andhra Pradesh government to set up its technology campus here.

The MoU was signed by Gary Schuster of Georgia Tech and Venkataramana, Principal Secretary, Higher Education, at the Secretariat here in the presence of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.

As per the MoU, the state government would allot adequate land for the premier university at Hyderabad and also in Visakhapatnam to meet its expansion plans.

Established in 1988 with its main campus in Atlanta, Georgia Institute has international campuses in France and China and it conducts research and training in the areas of management, sciences, architecture, computing, engineering and liberal arts.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the presence of Georgia Tech Center in Andhra would add pace to the developmental initiatives of the state in the area of higher education.

“We are confident that the association with Georgia Tech will help in churning out the world’s best talent pool from the state,” Reddy said.

Under the MoU, the government would earmark 20 acres in Hyderabad and 70 acres in Visakhapatnam for setting up technology campus.

GeorgiaTech would go through formalities in getting the approvals from All Indian Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to commence its academic programmes in due course of time, officials said and hoped that the operations would commence from 2009.
