Giving in to the demands of the opposition parties, the state government on Tuesday announced a judicial inquiry by a retired high court judge as well as a parallel inquiry by the CBI into the alleged land deals relating to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Project in the Hyderabad metro region.

Announcing this at a press conference, chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy said: This is a tussle between facts and fiction. I want the people to know the truth and also ensure that my government comes clean on this entire issue.

So, I am ordering not only a CBI inquiry but also a judicial probe into the land deals, the chief minister said.

The terms of reference for the inquiries would be finalised soon, he said adding that all land deals over the last four to five years might be brought under the purview of the inquiries.

At the start of the press conference, YSR said that the opposition parties, during the course of the Assembly debate on the ORR land issue had never sought any judicial or CBI inquiry.

Only BJP floor leader G Kishan Reddy had sought a judicial probe. The TDP had demanded a CBI probe in the PIL filed in the High Court on Monday, the chief minister pointed out.

Nevertheless, the government on its discretion was ordering a CBI probe, he said. When reporters pointed out to oppositions repeated demands for a judicial probe, the chief minister said he was ready for a judicial inquiry as well.
