Shilparamam, The Arts & Crafts Village
As one drives down Madhapur road, one faces an impressive gateway with huge terra-cotta horses that leads to a village with festive looking precincts. This is Shilparamam, the arts and crafts village of Hyderabad - where a series of cultural event take place throughout the year. A centrestage of cultures. A melting pot of Traditions. An endeavor to preserve our dying arts forms. This precisely sums up Shilparamam.
Shilparamam is spread over 50 acres of land nestling by the hillside with natural slopes and wild vegetation studded by unique rock formations. It showcases various art forms and handicrafts of various artists from all over the State. Shilparamam plays host to myrid traditions of arts and crafts of the country.
At Shilparamam, every season brings with it the mood of festivity and an occasion to celebrate. Here Indian festivals are celebrated in the most traditional way and unique festivals bring together talents from the world over.
At the heart of this picturesque crafts village, designed along the natural slopes, is the amphitheatre where performances ranging from classical music concerts and dances to contemporary English plays are staged. Renowned classical dancers and music maestros as well as young artistes come here from all over the country to perform.
Special efforts are made to encourage folk and tribal art. Dances like the Koya of the hunting class; Dhimsa, the mild and gentle dance of women; Dappulu, a dance with simple percussion instruments; Veera Natyam, the arduous dance with acrobatic skills and a dozen more are performed. Further inside is the boating facility with both peddling and rowing boats. Shilparamam is a perfect place to take a day off from the busy city life.
The annual All-India Festival of Arts and Crafts held here in March brings to the limelight the cultural and artistic traditions from every nook and corner of the country and is a unique opportunity to take home a piece of India. This helps in establishing a direct contact between the craftsmen and the buyers and also helps in educating people on the value of their rich cultural heritage. Potential buyers can come and pick up objects of art directly from the artisans without having to deal with middlemen.
The land was granted to the South Zone Cultural Center by the Government of Andhra Pradesh for the development of an idyllic rural setting. The efforts of modern landscape architecture inspired by rustic aesthetics-brick structures with thatched roof, walls decorated with traditional rangoli motifs-create an authentic village locale. The village was conceived with an idea to create an environment for the preservation of traditional crafts.
Shilparamam is about 25 km from Hyderabad railway station, 31 km from Hyderabad bus station, and few feet away from the famous HITEC City. Located at Madhapur, it is easily accessible by road and well connected by public transport.
